Fundraising activities

Children

To help fulfil our charitable aim of promoting sign language we also visit local schools to put on  performances and workshops.  We have held full school assemblies, and smaller group performances where the children are encouraged to interact and thereby learn some signs.  Some schools have taken part in our annual shows, and some have been encouraged to start their own signed song group.  The group now holds free signing lessons for children or adults, please follow the link to find more details.

Many children sign before they can talk, and we have discovered that visiting Special Schools encourages children to communicate with us and those that cannot sign enjoy the entertainment. The group regularly visits The Acorns Children’s Hospice, Victoria Special School, and Bridgetown Primary for example.  Some of these children have no other forms of communication except sign language.

Over several years Music in Motion has been involved in youth organisations e.g. Cubs, and Brownies, helping them to learn Sign Language for their Communications badges.  Again, these groups have also been involved with our recent shows.

Other Members of the Community

Since many people find signed songs entertaining we have used this in visiting retirement homes and sheltered accommodation schemes where the residents have enjoyed singing and signing along with the songs.  Some retirement homes have asked us to return on a regular basis.

For several years we have supported St Mary’s Hospice in their Annual Tree of Life Christmas Carol Concert where we sign along with the choir.

We have forged strong links with Nottingham Deaf Society, and have recently joined forces to raise money to enable their community centre to continue the excellent work they do within the deaf community.  We also supported the Deaf Children’s Society in Crewe and Church Eaton, at their fundraising events and were subsequently asked as special guests to the Maidstone Deaf and Disability Centre.

Fundraising is the lifeblood of any charity and the volunteers at Music in Motion know that the more money that is raised, the more they’re able to help those charities that we feel committed to.

There are many ways to support the charity; you can get involved by coming along to a performance - just see the events calendar, you can donate directly by contacting our treasurer, John, by leaving a gift in your will or if you want to organise your own event, then please consider us!
